Moving into a new home? Before you get carried away with paint swatches and throw pillows, let’s talk about the first five things you actually need (and won’t regret buying later).

1 | A Good Vacuum (Yes, Really)

I know, it’s not glamorous and it’s unexpected. But if your new place has floors (spoiler: it does), a solid vacuum is one of the best investments you can make. Whether it’s hardwood, carpet, or something in between, having the right cleaning tools from the start will keep everything feeling fresh and manageable while you settle in. Here are my picks that are highly rated:

Bonus tip: Look for one that’s lightweight and cordless if your home has stairs. Your back will thank you.

2 | Smart Storage Bins and Baskets

Unpacking is one thing. Staying organized? That’s another story. Investing in a few stylish (and functional) bins early on will help corral the chaos, especially in areas like pantries, bathrooms, entryways, and closets.

Start with a set of matching woven baskets or clear stackable bins. You’ll be surprised how much calmer your home feels when everything has a place.

3 | a quality set of everyday dishes

Skip the mismatched hand-me-downs (unless they’re sentimental!) and treat yourself to a durable, neutral dish set. You’ll use these multiple times a day, and a cohesive set instantly makes meals feel more put together, even if it’s just takeout on night one.

Look for something dishwasher- and microwave-safe, with a finish you’ll still love years from now.

4 | a big, cozy throw blanket

Who doesn’t want a cozy throw blanket? You’ll move this blanket around more than you think; from the end of your bed to the couch to that one chair that’s still missing a cushion. It adds instant warmth, softness, and style to any room (and let’s be honest, moving is exhausting - you deserve to curl up in something cozy).

Neutral tones are a safe bet, but if your style leans bold, this is a fun place to play with color or texture.

5 | a few well-placed lamps

Overhead lighting in new homes is often either harsh or non-existent. A couple of table or floor lamps can instantly make your space feel more inviting and lived-in.

Focus on areas you’ll use the most right away like the entryway, living room and your bedroom and choose lamps that complement your style but provide enough light for reading or winding down.

Bonus tip: Get a few candles (of the same scent) so you can have a signature scent in your house. It’s always nice to have a candle burning and have a scent that you associate with home (even if it’s still empty!).

You don’t need to rush to furnish your whole house in a weekend. But having a few foundational pieces from the start will make your new place feel like home, not just a place where your boxes live.
