How to Design a Kid-Centric Space

Having kids is the most rewarding thing ever, in my opinion. But the hardest part is how fast the time goes and how fast they grow! If you have kids that have outgrown their baby rooms but aren’t sure how to make them a big kids room that will last them a while, then keep reading! Creating a room for your child that evolves with their changing needs and interests can be both practical and beautiful. Here are some tips to help you design kid’s spaces that will grow with your child over time:

CHOOSE A NEUTRAL BASE COLOR PALETTE

Opt for neutral colors for walls and larger furniture pieces (even in kids spaces!). Whites, grays, and beiges provide a timeless backdrop that can easily be updated with bedding, accessories and decor as your child grows.

INCORPORATE MODULAR STORAGE SOLUTIONS

Use modular storage units that can be reconfigured as your child's needs change. Cube storage systems, stackable bins, and adjustable shelves offer flexibility for storing toys, books, and clothes.

CREATE A MULTI-FUNCTIONAL PLAY AREA

Designate a section of the room for play that can be easily updated. A play table can transition from a LEGO station to a homework desk. Add a neutral rug and some floor cushions for a cozy reading nook that can later become a chill-out zone.

USE REMOVABLE WALL DECOR

Choose wall decals, posters, and peel-and-stick wallpaper for easy updates. This allows for frequent changes without committing to permanent alterations as your child's interests change.

ADD PERSONAL TOUCHES WITH SWAPPABLE DECOR

Personalize the space with items that can be easily swapped out, like throw pillows, bedding, comforters and artwork. This allows you to refresh the room’s look without a complete overhaul. Use lamps that are fun but will also grow with them.

DESIGN WITH SAFETY IN MIND

Always prioritize safety, especially for younger children. Secure furniture to walls, use soft-close mechanisms on drawers, and avoid sharp corners to create a safe environment that can be easily adapted as they grow.

By thoughtfully planning and selecting adaptable pieces, you can create a kid-centric space that remains functional and stylish through every stage of your child. This means you won’t have to update your kid’s room every 2 years as their interests change, you can just swap out small accessories and decor.
