Essential Rug Sizing Guide

One of the biggest mistakes I see in client’s homes is rugs that are too small for a space. When a rug is too small, it actually makes the overall space look smaller. Choosing the appropriate rug size is crucial to ensure that it complements the proportions and layout of your room.

Here's a comprehensive guide to help you select the best rug sizes for each space in your home, along with some key considerations to keep in mind:

LIVING ROOM

  • Sofa Coverage: For a cohesive look, opt for a rug that extends beyond the edges of your sofa. A rug that’s large enough to have the front legs of the furniture will create a well-defined and inviting seating area.

  • Open Space: If you have a spacious living room with furniture arranged away from the walls, choose a rug that accommodates all the seating elements to tie the room together or at a minimum, has all the front legs of all free-standing furniture on the rug.

DINING ROOM

  • Table Proportions: Select a rug that has enough space for chairs to be comfortably pulled back without catching on the edge of the rug. Ensure that the rug extends beyond the dining table to maintain a cohesive and functional dining area.

BEDROOM

  • Bed Placement: Choose a rug that extends at least 2-3 feet beyond the sides and foot of the bed to create a soft and comfortable landing area for your feet. A rug that spans the width of the bed can help to define the sleeping space and add a cozy touch to your bedroom..

  • Runners: Consider using a runner on each side of the bed if a full-size rug underneath isn't possible. This can add a touch of luxury and comfort to your bedroom layout.

ENTRYWAY

  • Functional Space: Opt for a small rug that can withstand high foot traffic and effectively trap dirt and debris. Choose a size that accommodates the door's swing and leaves enough space for it to open and close without catching on the rug.

HALLWAYS

  • Runner Length: Select a runner rug that spans the length of the hallway to create a visually elongated and inviting walkway. Ensure that the width of the runner is appropriate for the width of your hallway to maintain proportion and balance.

CONSIDERATIONS WHEN PICKING A RUG SIZE:

  • Room Dimensions: Take accurate measurements of the room to determine the appropriate rug size that complements the space without overwhelming it.

  • Furniture Placement: Consider the layout and placement of furniture to choose a rug size that anchors the seating or dining area effectively.

  • Traffic Flow: Factor in the foot traffic in the area to select a rug that can withstand frequent use and is easy to maintain.

  • Style and Aesthetic: Align the rug style with the overall style and theme of the room to create a cohesive and visually appealing space.
